Crossville, AL (October 24, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Wednesday morning on Alabama Highway 68, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that the incident took place around 9:05 a.m. near DeKalb County Road 478, approximately two miles west of Crossville.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Sandra W. Mashburn, 70, of Albertville, was driving a Ford Explorer when her vehicle was struck by a Jeep Wrangler. Following the collision, the Jeep left the roadway and caught fire, while the Explorer subsequently collided with another vehicle. Unfortunately, Mashburn was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep sustained injuries and was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for treatment. Additionally, a 13-year-old passenger in the Jeep was taken to a local hospital for medical care.
ALEA initially reported the two-vehicle crash at around 10:16 a.m., indicating that the roadway had been closed to facilitate emergency response and investigation. By 11:38 a.m., the roadway was reopened to traffic.
