Crawford County, MO (November 11, 2024) – A two-vehicle collision occurred late Saturday night on westbound Interstate 44, approximately five miles west of Cuba. Emergency responders and law enforcement agencies quickly arrived to assist those involved.

The crash took place at around 11:44 PM and involved a 2018 Jeep Compass and a 2021 Kenworth truck. According to reports, the Jeep Compass, driven by a 25-year-old female from Lonedell, MO, came to a complete stop in the passing lane of the interstate. The Kenworth, driven by a 22-year-old male from Lewisburg, PA, was unable to avoid the stopped vehicle and collided with its rear. The force of the impact pushed the Jeep Compass into the driving lane while the Kenworth came to rest in the median.

The driver of the Jeep Compass, who was not wearing a safety device, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis for treatment. The driver of the Kenworth was not reported injured. The Jeep Compass was totaled and removed from the scene by Chris and Sons Towing, while arrangements are pending for the Kenworth’s removal.

Assistance at the scene was provided by Trooper D.B. Howell, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cuba Police Department. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery.

Highway Accidents in Missouri

Interstate 44 sees heavy commercial and passenger traffic, making it a common site for serious accidents. Collisions involving stopped vehicles, such as this one, often result in severe damage and injuries due to the high speeds typically involved.

Tips for Highway Safety

  • Avoid Stopping on the Roadway: If necessary, move to the shoulder or another safe area to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions.
  • Stay Aware: Constant vigilance is essential on interstates to react quickly to unexpected situations.
  • Wear a Safety Device: Using seat belts is crucial to reducing injury severity in crashes.

This crash underscores the importance of adhering to highway safety measures to prevent similar incidents. The role of safety devices is particularly significant in reducing the impact of injuries.
