Coushatta, LA (February 24, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Rd claimed the life of a local woman and left a Red River Parish deputy severely injured on Saturday morning.
According to Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred around 9:45 a.m. when a marked Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 23-year-old Asia Pikes, was traveling west on US-84 with emergency lights and sirens activated. At the same time, 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta was driving a Nissan Rogue eastbound.
For reasons still under investigation, Winn attempted to make a left turn and collided with the oncoming Tahoe. The impact caused fatal injuries to Winn, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Pikes, who was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities do not suspect impairment, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Importance of Seatbelt Use in Louisiana Crashes
Failing to wear a seatbelt significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash. In Louisiana, data from the Highway Safety Commission shows that unrestrained occupants account for a large percentage of fatal crashes each year. Seatbelts are one of the most effective safety measures, reducing the risk of fatal injuries by nearly 50%.
Accidents involving law enforcement vehicles add another layer of complexity. Officers responding to emergencies often travel at higher speeds, requiring other motorists to remain aware of flashing lights and sirens. Failing to yield or making unsafe turns can lead to devastating collisions, as seen in this crash on US-84.
Survivors of serious car accidents often face lengthy recoveries, high medical costs, and emotional trauma. For families dealing with the loss of a loved one, the impact can be even more severe. Seeking legal and financial guidance may be necessary for those affected by major crashes.
