Corpus Christi, TX (March 6, 2025) – A tragic crash involving a suspected drunk driver on Violet Rd claimed the life of a Robstown man and an unborn baby.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the accident occurred around 7:50 p.m. when 26-year-old Alexis Rios of Robstown lost control of a 2009 Nissan Altima while traveling south on the 4400 block of Violet Rd. The vehicle veered off the road and collided head-on with a northbound 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA.
The Mercedes was driven by 27-year-old Amy Lopez of Corpus Christi, with her husband, 26-year-old Mark Oliva, as a passenger. Both sustained injuries in the crash. Lopez, who was 23 weeks pregnant, was transported to Bay Area Hospital, where she tragically lost her unborn child due to injuries sustained in the accident.
In the Altima, passenger Justin Buentello, 26, of Robstown, was found unresponsive at the scene and rushed to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
Rios was also transported to the hospital for treatment and later admitted to investigators that she had been drinking alcohol before the crash. She voluntarily submitted to a blood test, with results pending as authorities continue their investigation.
The crash remains under review by Texas state troopers from the Corpus Christi Highway Patrol Office.

DUI-Related Crashes in Texas
Drunk driving remains a leading cause of fatal accidents in Texas, claiming thousands of lives each year. Head-on collisions, particularly those involving impaired drivers, often result in catastrophic injuries and tragic losses. Roads like Violet Rd in Corpus Christi, where traffic flows in both directions with limited barriers, can become especially dangerous when a driver loses control.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, alcohol-related crashes accounted for a significant percentage of fatal accidents statewide last year. The effects of impaired driving extend far beyond the immediate victims, leaving families devastated and communities at a loss.
Victims of DUI crashes and their families may have legal options to seek justice and compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and emotional suffering. When an accident results from another driver’s reckless actions, holding them accountable can help prevent future tragedies.
If you or a loved one has been impacted by a drunk driving accident, seeking medical attention and legal support is crucial in navigating the aftermath.
