Coos Bay, OR (November 27, 2024) – A fatal crash occurred on Highway 42 near milepost 10.4 in Coos County just before noon on Monday, November 25, 2024. Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to the two-vehicle collision, which claimed the life of 32-year-old Brandon Smith from Coos Bay.
According to the preliminary investigation, Smith was driving a BMW sedan westbound on Highway 42 when, for reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle went into an uncontrolled spin. The BMW crossed into the eastbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by 32-year-old Dana Salmon of Myrtle Point.
The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to come to a stop in the eastbound lanes. Tragically, the BMW caught fire, and Smith was declared deceased at the scene. Salmon was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, though her current condition has not been disclosed.
The highway was closed for approximately four hours as emergency responders from OSP, Coquille Police Department, Coquille Fire Department, Coquille Ambulance, and ODOT worked on the scene to investigate and clear the wreckage.
