Motorcycle Accidents and Lane-Splitting in California
California is the only state where lane-splitting—motorcyclists riding between lanes of slow-moving or stopped traffic—is legally permitted. While it can help reduce congestion and prevent rear-end collisions, it also carries risks, particularly when drivers fail to check their mirrors or make sudden lane changes.
Accidents involving motorcycles often lead to severe injuries, as riders have little protection against the force of impact. Common injuries in these crashes include fractures, road rash, and head trauma, even when a helmet is worn. Motorcyclists must remain vigilant while lane-splitting, and drivers should always check their surroundings to prevent collisions.
