Columbus, OH (February 26, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed in a tragic accident early Wednesday morning after being struck by two vehicles on Interstate 70 West near the I-270 interchange, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:00 a.m. after reports of a pedestrian crash in the westbound lanes of I-70 between Brice Road and I-270. Authorities identified the victim as 38-year-old Amber Royston, who was walking in the moving lanes of traffic when she was struck by an unidentified vehicle. The vehicle continued traveling westbound and did not stop.
Following the initial impact, Royston was hit a second time by a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica. The driver of the minivan stopped immediately and called 911. Paramedics assessed Royston upon arrival but tragically pronounced her dead at 3:22 a.m.
Due to the severity of the accident, all westbound lanes of I-70 were shut down for several hours, causing significant delays for morning commuters. The roadway was fully reopened around 7:10 a.m. The Columbus Police Department continues to investigate, and authorities urge anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver to contact Columbus police or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s family.
Pedestrian Accidents on Highways in Ohio
Pedestrian accidents on high-speed roadways like Interstate 70 are often catastrophic due to the force of impact and the lack of pedestrian protections. Highways are designed for vehicle traffic, and when individuals find themselves on these roadways—whether due to a disabled vehicle, an emergency, or other circumstances—the risks are significantly increased.
Nighttime visibility is a major factor in pedestrian-related highway accidents. Drivers may not see individuals in the road until it is too late to react. Additionally, hit-and-run crashes are particularly devastating, as they delay emergency response and hinder investigations. Ohio law requires all drivers involved in accidents to remain at the scene, and failing to do so carries severe legal consequences.
For families who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, the emotional and financial burdens can be overwhelming. Seeking legal guidance can be crucial in understanding available options for justice and compensation.
