Columbus, OH (September 24, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred in northeast Columbus early Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to two others. The crash took place at approximately 12:54 a.m. at the intersection of Woodland Avenue and East 17th Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a collision involving a tan sedan and a red sedan. Preliminary investigations revealed that the female driver of the red sedan, later identified as 34-year-old Markeesha Waddell, was temporarily trapped inside her vehicle. First responders worked quickly to extricate her from the wreckage, and she was subsequently transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Unfortunately, she later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The male driver of the tan sedan was also taken to Grant Medical Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition. His female passenger was transported to the same facility but was listed in critical condition.
According to authorities, a Columbus Police Community Crime Camera captured the incident, showing the red sedan running a red light before being T-boned by the tan sedan, which had a green light at the time of the crash. This evidence is critical as the Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The intersection of Woodland and East 17th Avenue has been closed for an extended period while detectives process the scene and gather further evidence.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Markeesha Waddell during this difficult time as they cope with their loss.
