Columbus County, NC (October 4, 2024) – A tragic traffic accident occurred on NC 87 near the International Paper papermill on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a man who was impaled by a log. The incident unfolded when a log truck, attempting to turn into the papermill, was struck in the rear by a box truck coming from Fayetteville.
According to the Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Department, the impact caused a log approximately 3 inches in diameter to penetrate the driver’s left stomach area. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and worked diligently to extricate the injured driver. This involved using a chainsaw to cut the log and removing the roof of the truck to facilitate the rescue.
The driver was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, the man succumbed to his injuries at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 3.
