Columbia, SC (September 24, 2024) – A tragic three-vehicle collision occurred on Interstate 20 in Richland County early Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to another. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the accident took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. near the 70 mile marker, close to the junctions with U.S. 321/Fairfield Road and U.S. 21/North Main Street.
According to Master Trooper Gary Miller, the vehicles involved in the crash included a 2004 Mercedes-Benz, a 2009 Honda sedan, and a Dodge sedan, all traveling east on I-20 when the collision occurred. While the exact cause of the wreck remains under investigation, it has been confirmed that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz and one occupant from the Honda sedan lost their lives in the incident. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the deceased victims.
Additionally, another person in the Honda was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. However, further information regarding the condition of the surviving victim has not been disclosed. The driver of the Dodge sedan was the only occupant in that vehicle and, fortunately, did not sustain any injuries.
At this time, authorities have not provided information regarding whether any of the individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
