Columbia County, WI (February 2, 2025) – A high-speed pursuit in Columbia County ended in a fatal rollover crash on Highway 33 Saturday afternoon, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when a westbound vehicle on I-90/94 near the I-39 interchange in the Town of Caledonia was observed traveling at a high rate of speed. A deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated to over 100 mph, weaving through traffic to evade law enforcement.
The pursuit lasted approximately 45 seconds before the fleeing vehicle exited onto Highway 33. Due to excessive speed, the driver lost control while navigating the exit ramp, resulting in a rollover crash. Two of the four occupants were ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, providing life-saving measures to the injured victims. One of the ejected occupants was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The driver, a 22-year-old male, was also hospitalized and is now facing multiple felony charges.
Authorities confirmed that both speed and intoxication played a role in the crash. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

High-Speed and DUI Crashes in Wisconsin
Wisconsin law enforcement agencies frequently respond to high-speed chases and DUI-related crashes, which remain a leading cause of serious and fatal accidents across the state. Speeding at excessive levels reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes, particularly when combined with intoxicated driving.
Statewide data indicates that a significant percentage of rollover crashes involve impaired drivers or reckless speeds, with fatal outcomes being more likely when occupants are ejected from the vehicle. Seatbelt use, proper road navigation, and responsible driving habits are critical in preventing such devastating accidents.
In cases involving DUI and high-speed crashes, victims and their families may have legal options to seek justice and compensation. Holding reckless drivers accountable is an essential step in preventing similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
