Columbia, AL (October 27, 2024) – A serious motor vehicle accident occurred on Highway 52 at July Road, west of Columbia, prompting an immediate response from local emergency services. At approximately 9:21 PM, Houston County 911 dispatched units to the scene, where reports indicated that there was entrapment and a vehicle was on fire.
Just moments before the accident was reported, Houston County 911 had dispatched the Columbia Police Chief to a separate shots fired call on Springview. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from that incident. However, as the Chief arrived at the shots fired scene, the motor vehicle accident was dispatched.
When Columbia Volunteer Fire and Columbia Rescue arrived at the accident scene, they quickly assessed the situation and called for two additional ambulances along with Survival Flight due to the severity of the injuries and the heavy damage reported. Prolonged extrication was necessary to free any trapped individuals from the wreckage.
Ashford Rescue also dispatched two additional ambulances to assist, and Webb Volunteer Fire was called to the scene. The Columbia Police Chief arrived shortly after the fire and rescue teams, followed by deputies from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and Kinsey Police. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Troopers were also dispatched to the scene.
As of 9:51 PM CST, Highway 52 was completely closed to facilitate emergency operations. This closure was necessary to ensure the safety of first responders and to allow for the landing of Survival Flight.
In a separate incident, at 9:41 PM, Houston County 911 dispatched Columbia Rescue to a medical emergency on Dogwood Avenue in Columbia. Headland Fire-Rescue was requested to respond to this medical emergency, but they were directed to approach via County Road 22 due to the ongoing closure of Highway 52.
At approximately 9:55 PM, Columbia Rescue departed the accident scene with one patient in emergency transport. Shortly after, the Columbia Police Chief closed Highway 52 at Bill Yance Road to allow Survival Flight to land safely.
