Collier County, FL (January 1, 2025) – A significant four-vehicle crash occurred Monday afternoon along southbound I-75 in Collier County, leading to the complete shutdown of traffic on Alligator Alley. Emergency responders, including a helicopter crew, arrived at the scene around 2:57 p.m. to assist the injured and manage the aftermath of the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the incident began when a 23-year-old Miami man, distracted by the radio while driving an SUV, failed to notice a closed right lane marked with orange traffic cones and a road ranger pickup truck with a flashing arrow. The lane had been closed to address a disabled pickup truck with a boat trailer.

The SUV collided with the road ranger vehicle, which was subsequently pushed into the boat trailer and the path of an oncoming tractor/trailer. Both the Miami man and the road ranger driver sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no other significant injuries were reported. After hours of closure, the roadway has been reopened.

The crash is under active investigation by the FHP to determine further details about the sequence of events and contributing factors.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this collision,” officials stated.

Traffic Accidents on I-75 in Florida

Interstate 75, particularly the stretch known as Alligator Alley, is a critical transportation corridor in Florida, connecting major cities while traversing rural and sensitive environmental areas. Unfortunately, it is also the site of numerous accidents each year, many involving distracted driving, large commercial vehicles, and hazardous road conditions.

The crash in Collier County underscores the importance of remaining vigilant while driving, especially in work zones or areas marked by lane closures. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of roadway accidents in Florida, contributing to thousands of collisions annually.

Drivers are urged to stay alert, minimize distractions, and exercise caution around marked construction zones or stalled vehicles. These precautions are vital to ensure the safety of all road users and emergency responders working on Florida’s highways.
