Coleraine, MN (December 28, 2024) – Emergency responders were called to a crash with injuries on Northbound Highway 169 at the Trout Lake Rd intersection in Coleraine, Itasca County, on Thursday afternoon. The collision involved a blue Nissan Versa and a silver Chevrolet Impala, both sustaining significant damage.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:43 PM when the Nissan Versa, traveling west on Trout Lake Rd, attempted to cross the intersection. The vehicle collided with the northbound Chevrolet Impala. Following the impact, the Nissan Versa came to rest in the center median while the Impala stopped on the west shoulder of the northbound lane.

The Chevrolet Impala was driven by 46-year-old Gunner Eric Jurgansen of Taconite, MN. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Grand Itasca Hospital for treatment. His passenger, 74-year-old Karen Jean Jurgansen, also of Taconite, MN, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same facility.

The Nissan Versa was driven by 18-year-old Topanga A. Skinner of Nenana, AK. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Grand Itasca Hospital for medical care. Her passenger, 24-year-old Brooke Alison Olthouse, also of Nenana, AK, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same hospital for evaluation.

The road was wet at the time of the collision, which may have contributed to the crash. Alcohol was not a factor. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the precise events leading up to the collision. Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist the injured.

Injury Collisions in Minnesota

Intersections like Trout Lake Rd and Highway 169 in Itasca County are frequently the site of vehicle collisions, particularly during adverse road conditions. Wet roadways increase the risk of crashes, highlighting the need for extra caution by drivers navigating intersections.

Seat belt usage, as demonstrated in this collision, significantly reduces the severity of injuries in traffic accidents. The prompt response of local law enforcement, including the Grand Rapids Police Department, Itasca Sheriff’s Office, and Coleraine Police Department, along with medical services from North Memorial and Nashwauk Ambulance, ensured timely care for those involved.

Drivers are reminded to exercise vigilance and adhere to traffic rules, particularly at intersections with heavy traffic and challenging conditions. Defensive driving practices, such as reducing speed and maintaining awareness of other vehicles, can play a crucial role in preventing accidents.
