Coalinga, CA (October 15, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred Friday morning around 10 a.m. on the 5 Freeway south of Highway 145, resulting in the death of a fetus and injuries to a pregnant woman. According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision involved multiple vehicles, including a 2017 GMC Yukon, a 2022 Subaru Forester, and a 2023 Hyundai.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the GMC Yukon was traveling southbound on the freeway, directly ahead of the Subaru Forester, which was also heading in the same direction. The driver of the Hyundai, traveling at approximately 70 mph, was positioned directly behind the Subaru.
As the drivers of the GMC and Subaru slowed down for an unrelated traffic incident, the driver of the Hyundai failed to notice that traffic had come to a stop. This oversight led to the Hyundai crashing into the rear of the Subaru. The force of the impact propelled the Subaru forward, causing its right front to collide with the rear of the GMC.
The pregnant woman in the Subaru sustained facial trauma and a possible concussion as a result of the crash. Emergency responders from Sky Life were dispatched to the scene and airlifted her to Community Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Unfortunately, upon examination, medical professionals discovered that her fetus had suffered fatal injuries in the collision.
At this time, it remains unclear whether any other occupants in the vehicles were injured. The California Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this devastating incident.
