Clinton Township, NJ (January 27, 2025) – Seven people were hospitalized early Sunday morning following a crash involving a van and a New Jersey State Police car on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:42 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near milepost 18.4. A marked police car, parked in the center lane with its emergency lights on, was diverting traffic around the scene of a prior collision when it was struck from behind by a van, according to State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron.
The van’s driver and six passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The state trooper assigned to the parked vehicle was placing flares around the earlier crash site and was unharmed.
Earlier in the morning, State Police were investigating an unrelated crash in which an SUV collided with a tractor-trailer parked on the right shoulder of the highway. The SUV’s 41-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and was also taken to a nearby hospital.
The sequence of events and contributing factors for both collisions remain under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed further details.
The community extends its sympathies to those impacted by these crashes and hopes for their swift recovery. Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents in New Jersey
Highway collisions, such as the ones that occurred on I-78, are common in New Jersey due to the state’s dense traffic and high-speed roadways. Multi-vehicle crashes often result from factors like sudden stops, distracted driving, or failure to recognize hazards.
State law mandates that drivers reduce speed and switch lanes when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadway, often referred to as the “Move Over” law. Adhering to this rule is critical to preventing secondary accidents and safeguarding first responders.
In incidents where multiple parties are involved, determining liability can become complex. Drivers, passengers, and other affected individuals may need to seek legal or medical assistance to navigate recovery and compensation processes.
If you or a loved one have been involved in a traffic accident, understanding your rights is essential.
