Cleveland, OH (October 28, 2024) – A serious wrong-way crash occurred today on I-480 near State Road around 12:30 a.m., resulting in two individuals being hospitalized. The incident prompted a response from emergency services and led to significant traffic disruptions on the highway.
Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved two vehicles, and the damage was so severe that it was difficult for investigators to determine which vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction. The wrong-way driver, identified as an 85-year-old woman, was transported to MetroHealth Hospital in serious condition. A 25-year-old woman, who was also involved in the collision, was taken to Metro Hospital in critical condition.
Following the crash, the highway was limited to a single lane overnight but has since reopened for normal traffic flow. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This area is part of Northeast Ohio’s “wrong-way corridor,” which stretches from West 154th to East 140th streets. Just last week, a dozen freeway ramps in this region were marked to receive new wrong-way detection signs that flash when drivers enter from the wrong direction. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), wrong-way crashes are relatively rare but can be particularly deadly. As of last week, ODOT reported 70 wrong-way crashes in the state this year, resulting in 11 fatalities and 18 serious injuries.
Brent Kovacs, spokesperson for ODOT District 12, expressed the agency’s commitment to improving safety: “We definitely want to see a decrease and improved safety for all the motoring public in Northeast Ohio. A lot of times when we see wrong-way crashes, they hit an innocent motorist, unfortunately. So it’s about improving safety for everyone involved.”
Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we hope for a swift recovery for the injured.
