Clearwater Twp., MN (December 22, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 94 near Mile Marker 180 claimed the life of one individual. The collision occurred at approximately 10:54 PM and involved three vehicles, including two semi-trucks and a Honda Ridgeline, amidst snow and icy road conditions.
The accident began when a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia jackknifed into the center median cables due to the slippery road surface. Shortly afterward, a 2023 Honda Ridgeline, traveling eastbound, collided with the trailer of the jackknifed semi. Moments later, a second semi, a 2025 Freightliner Tractor, struck both the initial semi and the Honda Ridgeline, resulting in the second semi overturning.
The driver of the Honda Ridgeline, 61-year-old Thomas Victor Pearson of Monticello, MN, tragically lost his life in the crash. Emergency responders confirmed his death at the scene. The drivers of both semis, Kalifabdulahi Yusuf, 29, of Faribault, MN, and Ivane Tsereteli, 41, of Brooklyn, NY, were uninjured. Both were wearing seat belts at the time, and neither vehicle’s airbags were deployed. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in this accident.
Clearwater Fire & Rescue and the Wright County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine contributing factors, including the role of adverse weather conditions.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Thomas Pearson during this incredibly difficult time.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Minnesota
Winter weather in Minnesota frequently contributes to hazardous road conditions, as seen in this tragic accident. Interstate 94 is a vital corridor for commuters and commercial traffic, but during snow and ice events, it becomes a hotspot for collisions.
Jackknife accidents, such as the one that initiated this incident, are common during icy conditions and often involve large commercial vehicles losing control. Secondary crashes involving multiple vehicles pose additional risks, particularly on heavily trafficked highways like I-94. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and increase following distances during winter storms to mitigate the risk of such accidents.
Victims and their families impacted by fatal accidents should consider seeking legal or financial guidance to navigate the aftermath of these tragic events. Local resources and support systems are available to provide assistance and help families find justice.
