Claymont, DE (February 19, 2025) – Firefighters responded to a serious residential structure fire on Denham Ave in the Knollwood development on Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 9:10 a.m. following reports of a fire inside a two-story, middle-of-the-row home. Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy fire showing from both floors of the residence and immediately began suppression efforts while conducting a search for any occupants still inside.
One victim had already been pulled from the burning home by a bystander before firefighters arrived. A second victim remained inside, prompting a rapid rescue operation by fire personnel. Firefighters successfully located the second victim and removed them from the residence.
Both victims received medical treatment at the scene before being transported to an area hospital for further care. Their conditions have not yet been released.
The fire was eventually brought under control, but crews remained on-site to address remaining hot spots and conduct overhaul operations. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this fire, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured individuals.
Residential Fires in Delaware
Fires in residential homes can result in severe injuries, extensive property damage, and tragic losses. Homes within closely built communities, such as the Knollwood development in Claymont, pose greater risks of fire spread due to their proximity to neighboring structures.
Common causes of house fires include electrical malfunctions, cooking accidents, heating equipment failures, and unattended open flames. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office consistently urges residents to install and maintain working smoke detectors, practice fire escape plans, and exercise caution with heating and cooking appliances to prevent devastating fires.
Victims of residential fires often face serious medical treatments, financial hardships, and displacement from their homes. Recovering from such incidents can be overwhelming, and understanding available resources, support systems, and legal options is crucial for rebuilding.
