Clay, MO (October 25, 2024) – A vehicle collision occurred on Thursday evening at approximately 7:02 p.m. on I-435 Northbound at the 53-mile marker. The incident involved a 2024 Lexus and a 2024 Freightliner, resulting in moderate damage to one vehicle and minor damage to the other.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident transpired when the driver of the Freightliner, 66-year-old John D. Bedford from Carter Lake, Iowa, began to move into the lane occupied by the Lexus, driven by 55-year-old Leon Nguyen from Kansas City, Missouri. In an attempt to avoid a collision, Nguyen swerved left, striking a guardrail. The Lexus then overcorrected to the right, returned to the roadway, and collided with the towed unit of the Freightliner. Following the impact, the Lexus ran off the right side of the roadway, hitting another guardrail before coming to a stop against it.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Thao Trang Luu, a 52-year-old female occupant of the Lexus, sustained injuries and was transported to North Kansas City Hospital by EMS. Fortunately, John Bedford did not report any injuries and was able to drive the Freightliner from the scene.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, and further details may emerge as the investigation continues.
