Clay County, TX (November 12, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Highway 79 claimed the life of a 54-year-old man from Petrolia, Texas, on Tuesday. The crash, involving three vehicles, prompted an extended closure of the highway in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
According to Sgt. Juan Gutierrez of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident occurred when a Dodge Ram and a Chevrolet Cruze were stopped to allow a bus to unload passengers. A Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the same direction failed to control its speed, striking the Cruze and pushing it into the Ram. Tragically, Brian Wayne Wilson, 54, of Petrolia, was killed in the wreck.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced the highway’s closure in a social media post earlier in the day, urging motorists to use alternate routes such as Tucker and Weruk roads, as Watkins Road was also blocked by a stuck tractor-trailer. As of 6:25 p.m., Highway 79 remained closed, though it has since reopened to traffic.
Emergency responders and law enforcement are investigating the crash to determine the circumstances leading to the Silverado’s failure to control its speed. The loss of life in this accident serves as a somber reminder of the need for heightened vigilance on the road. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Brian Wayne Wilson during this difficult time.
