Clackamas, OR (December 30, 2024) – A tragic two-car collision on Highway 224 near milepost 15 claimed the life of a Portland man on Friday evening, according to the Oregon State Police (OSP). The crash occurred around 5:30 PM when a westbound Jeep Cherokee attempted a left-hand turn into a parking lot, entering the path of an eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe. The two vehicles collided in a side-impact crash.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 43-year-old Matthew Leroy Cooper of Portland, was pronounced deceased at the scene. OSP reported that Cooper was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The driver of the Hyundai escaped injury.
Traffic on Highway 224 was heavily impacted for approximately four hours as authorities investigated the scene. The OSP has determined that an unsafe left turn was the primary cause of the crash.
