Cilo, IA (September 22, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on September 20, 2024, at approximately 1:21 p.m. at the intersection of 75th Street and Granger Road, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The incident involved two Mercury Mountaineers, both driven by individuals in their late seventies.
According to the preliminary investigation conducted by Trooper Gonnerman, Vehicle 1, a 2010 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 79-year-old Roger Stroud from Cilo, was traversing a right curve when it failed to yield half of the roadway. This failure led to a collision with Vehicle 2, a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 79-year-old Danny Stubbs from Corydon, who was navigating a left curve at the same time. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn and enter the north ditch of Granger Road.
Emergency responders from Wayne County EMS arrived promptly at the scene to provide assistance. Unfortunately, Stroud was pronounced dead shortly after the collision. He was transported to Wayne County Hospital, where he was confirmed deceased. Stubbs, who also sustained injuries, was transported to the same hospital via privately arranged means for further medical evaluation and treatment.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, with Trooper Gonnerman leading the inquiry. Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine any contributing factors.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Roger Stroud during this difficult time.
