Cicero, IL (November 6, 2024) – A tragic fire broke out early Wednesday morning at a residence located at 5054 W 29th Street, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Firefighters received the initial call about the blaze around 5:15 a.m., and shortly after, a second call was made indicating that the entire second floor of the home was engulfed in flames.
Cicero Fire Department Battalion Chief Paul Lyttek, who was driving over the Laramie bridge at the time, observed heavy smoke and promptly requested additional firefighting units to respond to the scene. Upon arrival, he called for a box alarm, which activated six additional fire apparatus from nearby towns, including Berwyn, Oak Park, Stickney, North Riverside, Forest Park, and River Forest.
Fire crews successfully rescued a woman trapped on the second floor by deploying a ground ladder to her window. A man was also able to escape the fire with one of his sons; however, tragically, another son and his wife did not make it out of the home.
As the fire intensified, firefighters transitioned their efforts to a defensive strategy, as conditions inside the fully engulfed structure became too dangerous for entry after the initial rescue. During the incident, the structure adjacent to the home also caught fire but was determined to be vacant. At one point, two wooden frame constructions were ablaze simultaneously, complicating firefighting efforts.
Our thoughts are with the families affected by this devastating incident, and we extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
