Chicago, IL (February 16, 2025) – A driver was arrested for DUI after crashing into a Chicago Fire Department (CFD) truck on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) early Sunday morning, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP).
The crash occurred at approximately 4:38 AM on the eastbound lanes of I-290 at Morgan St, near the Little Italy neighborhood. At the time of the crash, the CFD fire engine was blocking lanes to protect a previous accident scene when the driver of a black 2018 Nissan collided with the truck.
A firefighter inside the fire truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Nissan driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was also cited for violating the Move Over Law (Scott’s Law), which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadway.
The Eisenhower Expressway was closed for an investigation, but all lanes reopened by 6:55 AM. Authorities have not released further details on the suspect or any additional charges.
Our thoughts are with the injured firefighter, and we hope for a full recovery.
DUI and Move-Over Law Violations in Illinois
Illinois enforces strict DUI laws to prevent alcohol-related crashes, especially on high-speed roadways such as I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway). Driving under the influence is a serious offense that endangers not only the driver but also emergency responders and other motorists.
Additionally, the Move Over Law (Scott’s Law) requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Failure to do so can result in severe penalties, particularly when an accident occurs.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), DUI-related crashes account for a significant number of roadway fatalities each year. Public safety officials continue to urge drivers to designate sober drivers, avoid distractions, and follow all traffic laws to prevent such dangerous incidents.
For individuals injured in accidents caused by impaired drivers, seeking legal guidance may help in navigating insurance claims and pursuing compensation for damages. Consulting with an experienced legal professional can provide the necessary support to protect victims’ rights.
