Chester, NY (March 5, 2025) – A fatal head-on collision on Route 17 westbound near Exit 126 in the Village of Chester claimed the life of one driver and left a teenage passenger seriously injured early Wednesday morning.
According to New York State Police, the crash occurred just before 2 a.m. when a Nissan, driven by 25-year-old Sydnie Haines of Blackwood, New Jersey, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The vehicle collided head-on with a Honda.
The driver of the Honda, 54-year-old Mordichy Zafir of Kiamesha Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 17-year-old passenger, also from Kiamesha Lake, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown for treatment.
Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash and have not yet determined why the Nissan was driving in the wrong direction.
