Cherokee County, KS (October 21, 2024) – A serious collision occurred in southeast Kansas on Saturday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, including four children. The crash took place just before 4 p.m. on October 19, approximately five miles northwest of Baxter Springs.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2018 Ford Explorer was traveling westbound on Southeast Greenwood Road when it failed to stop at a stop sign. This failure to yield resulted in a collision with a 1996 Ford Van that was headed north on Southeast 20th Street.
The driver of the Explorer, a 35-year-old woman from Columbus, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Tragically, her passenger, 36-year-old Matthew Atkinson, also from Columbus, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash log indicated that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The driver of the van, a 37-year-old woman from Columbus, sustained minor injuries. Additionally, four passengers in the van, all children aged 13 or younger, also suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, everyone inside the van was properly restrained, as noted by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
