Cherokee County, AL (November 29, 2024) – A two-vehicle collision claimed the life of 58-year-old Gerone L. Evans of Summerville, Georgia, on Wednesday evening. The crash occurred on Alabama 35 near the 7 mile marker, approximately three miles north of Gaylesville in Cherokee County. The incident took place at around 7:30 PM when Evans’ 1994 Nissan pickup was struck by a 2023 Nissan Altima driven by 55-year-old Debra J. Mitchell of Hermitage, Tennessee.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the force of the impact caused Evans’ vehicle to leave the roadway and overturn. Evans was ejected from the vehicle, as he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was transported to a hospital in Georgia but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Mitchell, along with her passengers—including two other Tennessee women and two children—sustained injuries in the crash. All were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been specified, but they are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Troopers from ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are currently investigating the cause of the crash. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Gerone Evans during this incredibly difficult time.
