Chelan County, WA (September 26, 2024) – A serious two-vehicle accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in injuries to five individuals. At approximately 3:45 p.m., the Washington State Patrol reported that the collision took place on State Route 20 (SR-20), about 22 miles west of Mazama.
According to preliminary investigations, a sedan driven by 33-year-old Emily Griebenow from Tacoma attempted to make a U-turn after pulling onto the shoulder of the roadway. Unfortunately, as she turned around, she crossed into the path of an oncoming mini-van. Trooper Jeremy Weber noted, “Apparently, she missed her turn… She obviously didn’t see it and turned in front of it.” This incident serves as a cautionary reminder for drivers about the dangers of making U-turns on busy highways.
The crash led to various unspecified injuries for Griebenow and all four occupants of the mini-van: 60-year-old Xianggan Kuang and 55-year-old Nong Zhang, both from Kenmore, as well as 61-year-old Runtao Li and 55-year-old Ming Zhang, both from Shanghai, China. Griebenow, Kuang, and Ming Zhang were transported to Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster for medical treatment, while Li and Nong Zhang received care at the scene.
Trooper Weber emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, stating, “The moral of the story is if you miss your turn, go down the road a ways away where it’s safe to turn around and go back at it. Don’t take a chance on cutting across the lanes of traffic.” Griebenow was cited for causing the accident, which resulted in the blockage of eastbound lanes on SR-20 for several hours.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident as they recover from their injuries.
