Chattanooga, TN (November 20, 2024) – Two individuals sustained injuries when their plane crashed on Shallowford Rd during Tuesday’s evening rush hour. The Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) reported that the small aircraft experienced engine failure just before 6:00 PM, leading to the crash in the 4600 block of Shallowford Rd, about half a mile from a nearby airport runway.

Despite the heavy traffic during rush hour, the plane narrowly avoided vehicles on Shallowford Rd and came to rest on the side of the road near the intersection of Shallowford Rd and Airport Rd. CFD described the outcome as “amazing” given the potential for greater harm.

When emergency crews arrived, one occupant had already exited the plane, while the other remained trapped inside. CFD personnel worked swiftly, cutting through pieces of metal and removing part of the aircraft to free the second individual. They also contained a small fuel leak to prevent further hazards. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Aviation Accidents in Tennessee

Aviation accidents, though rare, present unique risks and challenges, particularly when they occur in populated areas. Engine failures and other mechanical issues are common factors in small plane crashes, with investigations often focusing on maintenance records, pilot experience, and weather conditions.

Shallowford Rd, a major roadway in Chattanooga, carries substantial traffic during rush hour, making the avoidance of vehicles in this incident notably fortunate. The quick response by the Chattanooga Fire Department ensured that both occupants of the plane received timely assistance, minimizing the potential for further harm.

The FAA and NTSB will analyze the details of this crash to identify contributing factors and recommend safety improvements to prevent future incidents. In Tennessee, aviation authorities continue to emphasize the importance of regular aircraft maintenance and pilot training to ensure safe operations.
