Charlotte, NC (November 13, 2024) – Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a tragic accident that occurred in the Westover Division, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two teenage passengers.

The crash happened on Sunday, November 10, at approximately 1:16 AM, in the 6600 block of South Boulevard. Officers arrived at the scene alongside the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC to find a Toyota Scion fully engulfed in flames. Two teenagers were found outside the vehicle with injuries and were transported to Atrium Health Main for treatment.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 20-year-old Celeo Avalid Chirino, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.

Investigators believe the Toyota was traveling southbound on South Boulevard when it veered off course and struck a raised median, causing severe undercarriage damage. The vehicle came to a stop before catching fire. Detectives suspect excessive speed and alcohol impairment were contributing factors in the crash. All occupants of the Toyota were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.

Members of the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search Unit collected evidence from the scene and the hospital. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Fatal Accidents in North Carolina

Fatal crashes like the one on South Boulevard serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired and reckless driving. Excessive speed and alcohol are leading contributors to fatal accidents in North Carolina, accounting for numerous lives lost annually.

North Carolina law imposes strict penalties for driving under the influence, aiming to deter impaired driving and protect road users. Despite these measures, impaired and high-speed driving continues to pose significant risks.

When accidents result in fatalities, affected families often face overwhelming grief and financial challenges, including medical bills and funeral costs. Legal recourse may be available to seek compensation and hold responsible parties accountable.

Preventing accidents requires a concerted effort from communities, law enforcement, and individual drivers. Public awareness campaigns, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and responsible driving practices are essential to reducing accidents caused by speed and alcohol impairment.
