Charleston County, SC (November 20, 2024) – A serious collision involving a Charleston County ambulance and another vehicle occurred on Monday afternoon, leaving the driver of the civilian vehicle injured. The accident took place just before 4:00 p.m. on North Highway 17 near South Santee Rd in McClellanville.

According to Alexis Douglas of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the ambulance was responding to a non-emergency medical call and traveling north on N Hwy 17 near Rutledge Rd when the crash occurred. Investigators reported that the ambulance attempted to change lanes to turn left onto Rutledge Rd when it was struck on its rear passenger side by another vehicle.

The impact caused the civilian vehicle to overturn into the median, ejecting the unrestrained driver through the sunroof. The driver was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries. Fortunately, no patients were onboard the ambulance at the time, and the ambulance crew reported no injuries.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Updates will be provided as new details emerge. Our thoughts are with the injured driver during this difficult time.
