Casselton, ND (November 21, 2024) – A tragic collision on Interstate 94 claimed the life of a 75-year-old man and left a 72-year-old woman with serious injuries on Wednesday evening. The crash occurred approximately 12 miles west of Casselton around 6:20 p.m.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after an SUV collided with the trailer of a jackknifed semi, becoming wedged underneath. The semi had jackknifed after the driver, a 37-year-old man, braked to avoid two other semis that had also jackknifed in the median. While the semi’s truck portion stopped in the median, its trailer blocked both eastbound lanes of the icy interstate.
The SUV’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female passenger sustained severe injuries. Both individuals were extricated from the vehicle by first responders. The injured woman was transported to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for further treatment. Authorities confirmed that the semi driver was unharmed in the incident.
At the time of the crash, road conditions on the Interstate were treacherous due to ice and reduced visibility. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation and plans to release additional details about those involved in the coming days.
Truck Accidents in North Dakota
Truck accidents on North Dakota’s major roadways, such as Interstate 94, often present serious risks due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles. Icy road conditions and reduced visibility, especially during the state’s harsh winters, significantly increase the likelihood of such incidents. In this case, the chain reaction of jackknifed semis illustrates how quickly dangerous conditions can escalate.
When a semi-truck jackknifes, the trailer may swing out uncontrollably, blocking multiple lanes and putting other motorists at risk. Drivers of passenger vehicles often have little time to react, particularly in situations involving ice or impaired visibility, as seen in this tragic accident near Casselton.
North Dakota Highway Patrol and other safety authorities work diligently to investigate these accidents, determine contributing factors, and improve safety measures on the state’s roadways. Residents and travelers are encouraged to exercise caution and stay updated on weather and road conditions, especially during the winter months.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a truck accident, understanding your rights and options is crucial. The emotional and physical toll of such incidents can be overwhelming, and you don’t have to navigate the aftermath alone.
