Cass County, MO (February 6, 2025) – Emergency responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on the MO-7 Highway bridge over Hwy 58. The collision, which occurred around 6:18 a.m., resulted in moderate injuries for one driver and significant vehicle damage.
According to authorities, a 2008 Dodge was traveling northbound on MO-7 when it began to slow due to icy road conditions. A 2025 Honda Civic, also heading north, was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the Dodge. After the initial impact, the Honda veered off the left side of the road, hitting a guardrail, while the Dodge slid on the ice-covered roadway, traveled off the right side, struck a concrete barrier, and overturned.
The driver of the Dodge, a 38-year-old woman from Butler, MO, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Pleasant Hill EMS to Belton Regional Medical Center for treatment. The 20-year-old female driver of the Honda from Pleasant Hill, MO, was wearing her seatbelt and did not require hospitalization. The Honda sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene, while the Dodge was towed by J’s Southland.
Officials from the Pleasant Hill Fire and EMS and the Cass County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash. Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for her swift recovery.
Winter Weather Driving Hazards in Missouri
This accident underscores the risks associated with winter driving conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. In Missouri, icy roads are a common hazard during colder months, often leading to reduced traction and longer stopping distances. Bridges, like the one on MO-7 over Hwy 58, are especially dangerous because they freeze more quickly than other road surfaces due to their exposure to cold air from both above and below.
When driving in icy conditions, it is crucial to reduce speed, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises motorists to be particularly cautious on elevated roadways and to use winter tires for better grip. In this incident, the icy surface contributed to the Dodge losing control after being rear-ended, demonstrating how quickly conditions can turn hazardous.
Fortunately, both drivers in this crash were using seat belts, which likely helped minimize the severity of their injuries. However, the incident highlights how even minor collisions can escalate when winter weather is involved. Drivers should remain vigilant and prepare their vehicles for winter conditions, ensuring that brakes, tires, and other critical systems are in optimal working order.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a winter weather-related accident, it’s important to seek both medical attention and legal guidance. Icy road conditions can complicate insurance claims and liability assessments, making professional support invaluable.
