Casco, ME (November 1, 2024) – Emergency responders from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office rushed to a multi-vehicle collision on Thursday that left two individuals injured, one with life-threatening injuries. The crash, involving three vehicles, occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Route 302 near Lakewood Rd.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Kevin Lavoie of Windham was driving a 2023 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound when he collided with the back of a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado, driven by 69-year-old Dennis Butterfield of Casco, had stopped in preparation for a left turn onto Lakewood Rd. Following the initial impact, the motorcycle veered into the opposite lane and collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by 44-year-old Jeffrey Lynds of Windham.

Lavoie, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was promptly airlifted to Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight. Jeffrey Lynds suffered minor injuries and was transported to Bridgton Hospital for medical evaluation and care. Speed is considered a potential factor in the accident, though the investigation is still ongoing to confirm contributing details.

Due to the severity of the crash, Route 302 was closed for several hours while accident reconstruction teams from Gorham and Windham assisted the sheriff’s office in analyzing the scene. Our thoughts are with all individuals impacted by this difficult event.

Motorcycle Accidents in Maine

Motorcycle accidents, like the one reported in Casco, often involve significant injuries due to the exposed nature of motorcycle riders and passengers. In Maine, a combination of factors such as speed, helmet use, and road conditions can influence the severity of these accidents. According to data from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, motorcycle crashes tend to peak during the warmer months, with many accidents caused by a combination of high speed and unexpected road changes. Unfortunately, when motorcycles collide with larger vehicles, the consequences are often serious, especially for riders not wearing helmets.

Drivers in Maine are encouraged to exercise caution on the roads, particularly when sharing them with motorcycles. Following appropriate stopping distances, checking blind spots, and understanding the unique challenges motorcyclists face can prevent tragic outcomes. Motorcyclists are also advised to wear helmets and protective gear, regardless of state helmet laws, to reduce the risk of life-threatening injuries in the event of a crash.

Navigating the aftermath of a severe accident can be challenging. Injured victims often face medical bills, recovery costs, and emotional strain. Legal guidance can help those affected understand their rights, address potential claims, and ensure they have the resources needed for recovery.
