Cary, NC (December 1, 2024) – A tragic accident on Friday morning claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl who was struck by a trash truck while walking in a crosswalk on High House Rd near Cornerstone Dr, by the Cornerstone Shopping Center.

Cary Police responded to the scene around 10:00 AM after receiving reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found the girl had been struck by a commercial vehicle. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the young girl succumbed to her injuries. Due to her age, the Cary Police Department has declined to release her name.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 57-year-old Adrian Theodore Holt of Raleigh, was arrested at the scene. According to police, Holt failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, leading to the fatal collision. He faces several charges, including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to yield, failure to reduce speed, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Holt was given a $250,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Wake County Court on December 19. Initially reported as a dump truck, the vehicle involved was later confirmed by Cary Police as a trash truck operated by Wall Recycling, a private contractor serving the Cornerstone Shopping Center.

The Cary Police Department continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. This heartbreaking incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety and vigilance on the roads. Our thoughts are with the family of the victim during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in North Carolina

Tragic events like this underscore the critical need for drivers to remain vigilant, especially in areas with crosswalks and pedestrian traffic. North Carolina law requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks, and failure to do so can lead to devastating consequences.

Cary, like many urban areas, sees a mix of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, increasing the need for drivers and pedestrians alike to exercise caution. Despite public safety campaigns and enforcement efforts, accidents involving pedestrians remain a serious concern.

Families affected by pedestrian accidents often face unimaginable grief, coupled with medical expenses and legal complexities. In such cases, seeking proper legal guidance and community support can make a significant difference.
