Carson County, TX (December 04, 2024) – A 31-year-old Amarillo man tragically lost his life late Monday night in a crash involving a recreational vehicle (RV) on Interstate 40 near Groom, Texas. The incident occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m., about 0.89 miles west of Groom, when the driver of the RV swerved in an attempt to avoid a pedestrian standing in the roadway.
The RV, a 2004 Roadtrek 190 Popular, was traveling eastbound in the right lane when its driver, 35-year-old Brandon Langston of Duncan, Oklahoma, noticed the pedestrian. Langston braked and swerved to the right in an effort to avoid the collision, but unfortunately, the RV struck the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, later identified as Johnathan Morales, 31, of Amarillo, was pronounced dead at the scene by Carson County Justice of the Peace Kathleen Barkley. Langston, who was wearing a seatbelt, was unharmed in the crash. Two passengers in the RV, Laura McCartney, 52, of Oklahoma City, and Kevin Scott, 43, of Moore, Oklahoma, also were not injured, though McCartney was not wearing a seatbelt.
The crash took place on a stretch of I-40 where the roadway was clear, with dry pavement, and the posted speed limit was 75 mph. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and no further details have been made available at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Johnathan Morales, and we extend our hopes for healing to everyone affected by this tragic event.
Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Pedestrian accidents continue to be a major concern on Texas highways, where the combination of high-speed traffic and unexpected pedestrian presence can result in catastrophic outcomes. The tragic death of Johnathan Morales on I-40 is a stark reminder of the risks pedestrians face when they are on or near busy roadways. While the area where this incident occurred was clear and dry, the late hour and the high-speed limit of 75 mph contributed to the difficulty of the situation.
The swift actions of the RV driver, Brandon Langston, to try to avoid the collision are commendable, but sadly, not all pedestrian accidents can be prevented. This incident highlights the importance of remaining vigilant when driving on highways, especially in areas where pedestrians might be present unexpectedly. Drivers should exercise caution, particularly at night or during times when visibility may be limited, and always be prepared to react to sudden changes in road conditions.
Texas residents and travelers are encouraged always to be cautious when navigating highways and rural roads. Pedestrians are highly vulnerable on these roads, and efforts should be made to ensure they are safe from high-speed traffic, particularly on major highways like I-40.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this tragic accident. If you or someone you know has been affected by a similar incident, seeking legal counsel is crucial to understand your rights and to pursue any necessary claims for damages or compensation.
Local Accident Reports urges all motorists to remain alert, slow down in high-risk areas, and keep an eye out for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, especially on highways where the speed limits are high and the risk of accidents is greater.
