Carlstadt, NJ (January 15, 2025) – Carlstadt Police officers demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a house fire on 1st St, which erupted around 8:30 PM on Tuesday, January 14. Officers Brian Monroe, Chelsea Marafelias, and Anthony Bellina responded to a call regarding a resident in respiratory distress and arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, according to Carlstadt Police Chief Thomas Cox.

The officers swiftly evacuated a first-floor resident before reentering the burning building to rescue two additional residents trapped on the second floor. Following these heroic efforts, the officers assisted firefighters on the scene to ensure the fire was fully contained and everyone was safe.

A woman in her 80s, who relies on oxygen, was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 40 minutes, despite battling intense flames in frigid temperatures dipping into the 20s. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during their valiant efforts.

“Our officers consistently demonstrate remarkable courage, running toward danger to protect and save lives,” Chief Cox said. This sentiment echoed the community’s appreciation for the bravery and dedication of first responders.

Residential Fires in New Jersey

House fires remain a significant safety concern in New Jersey, especially during colder months when heating equipment is in heavy use. In Carlstadt and similar communities, older wood-frame homes can pose additional challenges during fire emergencies, as flames can spread rapidly.

Residents are urged to take proactive measures to prevent house fires, including ensuring that smoke detectors are functional, keeping flammable materials away from heating sources, and having an emergency evacuation plan. The quick response of first responders often makes the difference between life and death in these scenarios, as highlighted by this incident.

Those affected by house fires may face emotional and financial challenges, including temporary displacement and property damage. Seeking local resources, including community assistance programs, can provide essential support during the recovery process.
