Campton, NH (March 8, 2025) – Emergency responders from Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue were dispatched to a residential fire in Campton just after midnight. Upon arrival, crews found a single-family home engulfed in widespread flames. Despite their efforts to search the building, firefighters were forced to withdraw due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions and a partial structural collapse. Additional assistance from surrounding communities, including Woodstock, Lincoln, Plymouth, and others, was requested as they battled the flames in freezing temperatures and intense wind gusts. Despite the challenging conditions, the fire was brought under control at approximately 2 a.m. Tragically, one adult male was found deceased inside the home, and two dogs were also confirmed dead. A joint investigation by the Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue, Campton Police, and the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy.

Fires in New Hampshire

Residential fires in New Hampshire are a serious concern, especially in the winter months when freezing temperatures and snow can complicate firefighting efforts. New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s office has highlighted that residential fires in the state can often lead to significant property damage and, in the worst cases, loss of life. In the past year, the state has seen an increase in residential fires, often fueled by heating equipment, electrical malfunctions, and human error.

Firefighters in New Hampshire face numerous challenges when responding to fires in rural and semi-rural areas like Campton. The limited access to water, rough terrain, and adverse weather conditions often require additional resources to prevent the spread of fire and ensure the safety of responders. As seen in this tragic event, the emotional toll on firefighters and the community is substantial, especially when the loss of life occurs.

While the investigation into this fire is still ongoing, it serves as a somber reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially in residential areas. The public is reminded to check smoke detectors, ensure that heating devices are functioning properly, and follow safety protocols to minimize the risk of fire in the home.

Preventing Residential Fires

There are several steps residents can take to prevent fires from occurring in their homes:

  1. Install and Maintain Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors are the first line of defense against fire-related fatalities. Ensure detectors are installed on every floor, including in hallways outside of bedrooms, and test them regularly.

  2. Proper Heating Equipment Maintenance: Many residential fires occur due to faulty heating equipment. Residents should have heating devices, such as space heaters and wood stoves, inspected annually by a professional to ensure they are operating safely.

  3. Electrical Safety: Overloaded circuits and faulty wiring are common fire causes. Ensure that electrical appliances are in good working condition and avoid overloading outlets.

  4. Fire Escape Plans: Families should have a clear fire escape plan that all members are familiar with. Practice the plan regularly so everyone knows how to evacuate the house quickly in the event of a fire.

  5. Clear Flammable Materials: Keep combustible materials, such as paper and cloth, away from heat sources like stoves, heaters, and open flames.
