Cabell County, WV (November 7, 2024) – An early morning accident involving a semi-truck caused significant traffic disruptions on Thursday in Cabell County. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-64, between the Merritt’s Creek and 29th Street exits.
According to Barboursville Police Chief Darren McNeil, initial investigations suggest that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the truck striking the “continuator,” which is a barrier that separates contra-flow lanes in a construction zone that stretches for several miles. This initial collision resulted in both directions of the interstate being closed, prompting detours for motorists.
As the morning progressed, the eastbound lanes were reopened, and officials were close to allowing one lane of the westbound traffic to resume when a secondary collision occurred. Chief McNeil stated, “A secondary collision occurred, and we ended up having to shut it all back down. It’s probably going to be a couple of hours.”
The second crash involved another semi-truck, which was loaded with frozen food, while the first truck was carrying auto parts. Both vehicles erupted in flames, but fortunately, neither driver sustained serious injuries. Both were transported to the hospital for observation.
Chief McNeil noted that while the first driver’s accident was likely due to fatigue, the second incident was attributed to a combination of distracted driving and poor weather conditions.
Motorists are advised that it will take additional time to restore the highway to full capacity. Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto U.S. Route 60 at 29th Street, while westbound drivers are using the Merritt’s Creek connector to Route 2, then heading south into Huntington.
Our thoughts are with those involved in these accidents, and we hope for a swift recovery for the drivers affected.
