Byron Twp, MI (January 22, 2025) – A 46-year-old Middleville man sustained serious injuries Tuesday morning after being struck by an out-of-control vehicle on 100th Street SW in Byron Township. The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m. near Clyde Park Avenue and US 131.
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the man had exited his vehicle to assist the occupants of a Chevrolet Traverse that had crashed. While outside his car, he was struck by a Honda Pilot driven by a 32-year-old woman from Hastings, who lost control of her vehicle on the slick, icy roadway. Emergency crews arrived promptly and transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he remains under care for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities emphasized the dangers of winter driving and the increased likelihood of secondary accidents near crash scenes. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit is conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.
Winter Driving Risks and Safety in Michigan
Incidents like the one on 100th Street SW underscore the risks posed by Michigan’s winter weather. Snow and ice reduce traction, and freezing temperatures create hazardous conditions, particularly near crash sites where multiple vehicles may lose control.
Officials urge drivers to reduce speeds, maintain safe distances, and remain alert when approaching crash scenes. Additionally, motorists should ensure their vehicles are equipped with winter essentials, including ice scrapers, blankets, and emergency kits, to prepare for unexpected delays.
