Butler, MO (October 29, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Tuesday morning at approximately 5:55 a.m. on Highway B, two miles east of Poplar Bluff. The incident involved a 2024 Nissan Altima and resulted in a fatality, prompting a response from local emergency services.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Nissan Altima, driven by 43-year-old Chuck A. Bailey from Poplar Bluff, was traveling westbound when it ran off the left side of the roadway. In the process, the vehicle struck 27-year-old Topanga S. Thompson, who was walking in the area. Following the impact, the vehicle collided with a tree. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
Tragically, Topanga Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County EMS Paramedic Jason Kaempfe at 6:16 a.m. Her body was subsequently transported to the Butler County Morgue. Chuck Bailey sustained moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
The accident has been classified as a fatality report, and the next of kin for the deceased has been notified. This incident marks the 55th fatality for Troop E in 2024, highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding pedestrian safety in the area.
