Burlington, WA (February 13, 2025) – A motorcyclist was killed in a wrong-way crash on southbound I-5 near George Hopper Rd early Thursday morning, according to Washington State Patrol (WSP).
Authorities say the incident began when a state trooper attempted to stop the motorcyclist near Mount Vernon. The rider initially sped away, prompting the trooper to end the pursuit. When the motorcyclist was spotted again, they attempted another stop, but the rider fled northbound in the southbound lanes of I-5.
As the motorcycle approached the Skagit River Bridge, it struck part of the structure, ejecting the rider. A passing semi-truck then struck the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The Skagit County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing. Traffic on I-5 was heavily impacted, with closures extending from Cook Road to the Skagit River Bridge. Authorities advised drivers to seek alternative routes due to expected lengthy delays.

Motorcycle Accidents in Washington
Motorcycle crashes, especially those involving high speeds or wrong-way travel, often result in catastrophic outcomes. Washington State’s highways see a significant number of serious motorcycle accidents each year, with many occurring on major interstates like I-5. Limited visibility, high speeds, and sudden lane changes can contribute to these tragic events.
Wrong-way collisions are particularly dangerous, as they often lead to high-impact crashes. While law enforcement follows strict pursuit policies, fleeing from police significantly increases the risk of severe or fatal injuries. Riders are encouraged to follow traffic laws and exercise caution on the road to prevent such devastating accidents.
For families affected by fatal motorcycle accidents, understanding legal rights and available resources is crucial. Seeking professional guidance can help in navigating the aftermath of a tragic loss.
