Brunswick County, NC (January 27, 2025) – A devastating residential fire early Monday morning claimed one life and left a firefighter injured in Brunswick County. The fire occurred at a home off Ocean Highway West near Shamrock Dr and Pea Landing Rd, with the Calabash Fire Department responding to the scene.

The fire was reported at 5:47 AM, prompting a multi-department response, including units from Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Grissettown, Waccamaw, and Horry County, South Carolina. Upon arrival, fire crews found the home engulfed in flames. During their search and rescue efforts, three firefighters entered the room where the victim was located. However, intense fire conditions forced them out of the residence through a window before they could remove the individual. Tragically, the victim was later confirmed deceased.

A firefighter sustained burns to the arm during the rescue attempt but was treated onsite and did not require further medical attention. The identity of the victim has not been released, and the cause of the fire and the fatality remain under investigation by the Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The collaborative effort of multiple fire departments helped bring the fire under control.

Our thoughts are with the family of the victim, the injured firefighter, and all those affected by this tragic incident.

Fire Safety in North Carolina

Residential fires pose significant risks to life and property, particularly in rural areas like Brunswick County, where response times can vary. Fires can spread rapidly, leaving limited time for evacuation. Common causes of house fires include electrical malfunctions, unattended cooking, and heating equipment misuse.

Fire safety measures, such as installing and maintaining smoke detectors on every level of a home, can save lives. Smoke alarms should be tested regularly, and batteries should be replaced as needed. Additionally, creating an evacuation plan and practicing fire drills can help occupants respond swiftly in case of a fire.

First responders and firefighters often face extreme dangers in their efforts to save lives and protect property. Burn injuries and other risks highlight the importance of safety protocols and proper equipment for emergency personnel.
