Broward County, FL (December 17, 2024) – Two women were tragically killed, and four others were injured late Sunday night when a car crashed into an earlier accident scene on Interstate 95 north of Atlantic Blvd, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The incident occurred just before midnight in the northbound lanes of I-95. Authorities reported that a Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla had been involved in a minor collision and had stopped in the inside general-purpose lane with their hazard lights, headlights, and taillights activated.
The two drivers were outside their vehicles exchanging information when a Toyota Camry approached the scene and failed to drive in a safe and prudent manner. The Camry collided with the stopped vehicles and the individuals near them.
Tragically, one woman who was outside the vehicles and another woman inside the Hyundai Elantra were pronounced dead as a result of the crash.
Four other people, including three men and one woman, sustained injuries. Among the injured were the driver of the Toyota Camry and a man who had been standing near the vehicles at the time of the impact. All injured individuals were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.
The northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for several hours as authorities investigated the collision, leading to significant traffic delays and heavy backups in the area.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we extend our hopes for a full recovery to those injured in this tragic accident.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Florida
Multi-vehicle crashes are a frequent and devastating occurrence on Florida’s highways, particularly high-speed corridors like Interstate 95. The nature of these incidents often results in severe injuries and fatalities, especially when vehicles and individuals are already stopped on the roadway.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), highways such as I-95 account for a significant portion of the over 400,000 annual crashes reported in the state. Contributing factors often include speeding, distracted driving, and failure to navigate safely around stopped vehicles or accident scenes.
When an accident occurs, it is critical for drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution, particularly in areas where other vehicles may be stopped. Proper measures, such as slowing down and ensuring clear passage, can help prevent secondary crashes, which often result in further harm.
For those injured or affected by multi-vehicle crashes, the physical, emotional, and financial toll can be overwhelming. Understanding one’s rights and seeking assistance is vital to recovering compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
