Brooklyn, NY (November 21, 2024) – A tragic accident involving an unmarked NYPD vehicle claimed the life of a woman on Wednesday evening in East New York. Authorities responded to a 911 call around 6:10 PM reporting the incident near the intersection of Riverdale Ave and Pennsylvania Ave.

According to police, the victim, believed to have been homeless, was lying in the street when she was struck by a black Toyota Sienna driven by members of an NYPD warrant squad. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Pennsylvania Ave without lights or sirens at the time of the incident. The woman suffered severe head injuries upon impact.

Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and transported the woman to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A plastic basket and paper bag of personal belongings were found near the scene, suggesting the woman may have been carrying these items before the accident.

The driver of the unmarked police van remained at the scene. Authorities have not made any arrests as of now, and the incident is under investigation by the NYPD.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in New York

New York City’s bustling streets are unfortunately a common setting for pedestrian accidents, particularly in high-traffic areas like Pennsylvania Ave in Brooklyn. These incidents often involve severe injuries or fatalities, as pedestrians are highly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles.

Factors contributing to such accidents can include speeding, failure to yield, poor visibility, or distractions. Pedestrian safety is a critical concern in urban areas, and law enforcement and city officials work to reduce these incidents through infrastructure improvements and public awareness campaigns.

Victims of pedestrian accidents—or their families—may face significant challenges in the aftermath, including medical expenses, emotional trauma, and legal complexities. In cases involving government vehicles, the process of seeking compensation or justice may require additional legal considerations.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a pedestrian accident, it is essential to understand your rights and explore the support available to you.
