Brooklyn, NY (January 13, 2025) – An 87-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being struck by a minivan while crossing East 88th St near Avenue L on Friday evening. The incident occurred as a 2010 Honda Odyssey, driven by a 39-year-old man, struck the woman and subsequently collided with a parked car, according to the NYPD.
The victim, identified as Esther Sealy, was transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Surveillance footage from a Ring camera captured the collision and was shared with local news outlets.
Authorities reported that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time.
Residents expressed frustration over traffic conditions in the area, with some citing speeding and disregard for safety as ongoing concerns. “There’s no regard…they just vroom past like nothing happened,” said Tiffany Griffith, a neighbor who lives across the street from the crash site.
Our thoughts are with those impacted by this incident, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
Pedestrian Safety in Brooklyn
Urban neighborhoods like Brooklyn often face heightened risks for pedestrian accidents due to dense traffic, limited visibility, and high-speed driving in residential areas. Intersections such as East 88th St and Avenue L can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians if drivers fail to adhere to traffic laws or exercise caution.
New York City has prioritized pedestrian safety through initiatives like Vision Zero, which aims to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. However, residents and drivers alike must remain vigilant to prevent tragedies like this one. For pedestrians, using crosswalks, wearing visible clothing, and staying alert are vital safety measures. Drivers should always slow down in residential areas and yield to pedestrians at crossings.
Losing a loved one to a pedestrian accident is a devastating experience. Families may face emotional and financial challenges, from funeral expenses to legal proceedings. Support and resources are available to help families navigate these difficult times.
