Broadlands, IL (February 7, 2025) – An 83-year-old man from Sidell, Illinois, was killed in a two-vehicle crash in rural Champaign County on Thursday afternoon, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 2700E and County Road 100N. Investigators determined that an 85-year-old man from rural Broadlands was traveling south in a pickup truck when he failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle collided with a pickup truck driven by Junior Evans, 83, who was traveling eastbound on County Road 100N.
The impact of the collision caused Evans to be ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other pickup truck and a passenger were transported to a local hospital with injuries. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman noted in a statement that this was the second crash in less than a week where an individual was ejected from a vehicle. He emphasized the importance of wearing seat belts to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a collision.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Junior Evans during this difficult time. We also wish a swift recovery to those injured in the accident.
Fatal Car Accidents in Illinois
Fatal car accidents in rural areas like Champaign County often occur at intersections where stop signs may be missed due to driver error, distraction, or reduced visibility. Collisions involving failure to yield at stop signs are a common cause of fatal crashes, especially on rural roads with less traffic control.
In 2023, Illinois reported a significant number of traffic fatalities, many resulting from preventable factors such as not wearing seat belts or failing to obey traffic signals. Ejection from a vehicle greatly increases the risk of fatal injuries, highlighting the importance of seat belt use for all passengers.
When fatal accidents occur, families are left not only coping with emotional loss but also facing financial burdens related to funeral expenses, medical bills, and other associated costs. In Illinois, families may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if the crash was caused by another party’s negligence, such as failing to stop at a designated sign. These claims can help cover the financial impact of the loss and provide a sense of justice for the victim.
