Bremer County, IA (February 6, 2025) – A collision on Highway 63 in northeast Iowa sent three people to the hospital Wednesday evening, according to the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred around 7:10 p.m. when a car collided with a semi-truck carrying an oversized load.
Authorities reported that 34-year-old Valentin Dumitru of Sarasota, FL, was driving a 2024 Peterbilt semi southbound on Highway 63, accompanied by pilot vehicles in front and behind due to the oversized load. As Dumitru began to turn west onto Highway 188, a Pontiac Vibe driven by 42-year-old Robert Nielsen of Dunkerton attempted to pass the semi on the right side.
Nielsen was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision with the passenger side of the semi. The impact caused the Pontiac Vibe to flip and come to rest upside down. Emergency responders transported Nielsen and two passengers to Allen Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Multiple agencies, including the Frederika Fire Department, Tripoli Fire Department, Tripoli Ambulance, Waverly Ambulance, and Iowa State Patrol, assisted at the scene. The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident. We wish all those involved a swift and full recovery.
Semi-Truck Collisions in Iowa
Accidents involving semi-trucks, like the recent crash on Highway 63 in Bremer County, often lead to serious consequences due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles. In this case, an attempt to pass a semi-truck carrying an oversized load resulted in a dangerous collision and rollover. These types of accidents highlight the importance of caution when sharing the road with large trucks, particularly when they are maneuvering or making wide turns.
In Iowa, highways like Hwy 63 are common routes for commercial trucking, increasing the potential for such incidents. Factors contributing to collisions with semi-trucks can include driver impatience, limited visibility around large vehicles, and misjudging the space needed for safe passing. Additionally, oversized loads require special attention from both the truck driver and other motorists, as these vehicles often need more room to turn and navigate intersections.
While commercial drivers are trained to handle their vehicles safely, other drivers must exercise caution when approaching or passing large trucks. It’s essential to avoid blind spots, allow ample space for turns, and never attempt risky maneuvers, such as passing on the right when a truck is preparing to turn.
