Boulder, CO (January 9, 2025) – A devastating single-car rollover crash on Highway 36 near Lefthand Canyon Drive claimed the lives of two parents and their family dog Friday morning. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to the scene at approximately 9:46 a.m. to investigate the tragic accident.

According to CSP, a Jeep traveling northbound on the highway veered into the grass median, rolled over, and came to rest in the southbound lanes. The crash resulted in the deaths of two 43-year-old adults from Castle Rock, who were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their family dog, severely injured in the crash, was taken to a veterinarian but had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

The couple’s two children, aged 11 and 16, survived the crash and are currently recovering from their injuries in a hospital. Authorities noted that the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, which may have contributed to the severity of her injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours as troopers conducted their investigation into the cause of the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking tragedy, and we hope for the full recovery of the injured children.

Rollover Accidents in Colorado

Rollover crashes, such as the tragic incident on Highway 36, are among the most severe types of vehicle accidents. These crashes often result in fatalities or serious injuries due to the high forces involved and the likelihood of occupants being ejected or crushed. Factors contributing to rollovers can include excessive speed, abrupt steering, or roadway conditions.

Colorado’s highway systems, particularly rural stretches like Highway 36, frequently see rollover accidents, underscoring the importance of seatbelt use and cautious driving. The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that rollovers account for a significant percentage of vehicle fatalities statewide, often involving single-vehicle incidents like this one.

Families affected by such tragedies face unimaginable challenges, from emotional loss to financial strain. Colorado law provides options for victims and their families to seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and other damages resulting from these accidents.
